Humble beginnings to the present moment.
My photography journey began in 2006 when I bought my first DSLR camera, eager to capture my travels and the beauty of Vancouver, British Columbia. Despite working full-time, I was committed to mastering my camera, using online resources like YouTube and podcasts for guidance. Amid personal challenges, I found comfort in the timeless value of photos, which grew more meaningful over time. Understanding their emotional impact, I embarked on this journey to help others revisit their memories.
As I honed my skills and shared my work online, opportunities gradually emerged. Starting with small family sessions, my projects grew in scale. The pivotal moment came in 2009 when I booked my first wedding shoot, marking the birth of Amrit Photography. Though initially hesitant about weddings due to my introverted nature, I came to appreciate their beauty and significance. Utilizing platforms like Facebook and later Instagram, I curated a digital portfolio that attracted recognition and inquiries. By 2015, I transitioned to full-time photography, fully dedicating myself to my craft.
Initially, my journey was marked by the absence of South Asian representation in the luxury wedding industry, leading to occasional discrimination. Despite these challenges, I persevered, establishing a niche for myself and Amrit Photography in an industry that initially overlooked South Asian wedding photographers.
Today, I am proud to showcase South Asian weddings among others in prestigious magazines and blogs globally, contributing to the recognition and celebration of all cultures and traditions. This journey has been about more than personal success; it’s been about breaking barriers and promoting diversity within the wedding photography industry.
I’m grateful for the opportunity to travel the world, capturing love in its myriad forms. Each destination, couple, and ceremony enriches my understanding of love and strengthens my commitment to my craft. From intimate ceremonies to grand celebrations, my goal has always been to craft images that transcend time, evoking the same emotions and nostalgia years down the line as they did on the day they were captured.
Continual learning is essential, as is embracing evolving technology. Recently, I tested the FUJIFILM GFX100S II camera and GF55mmF1.7 lens in a portrait session resembling a bridal morning shoot.
The image quality produced by the GFX100S II is truly unreal, with files that come out of the camera remarkably clean and detailed. Whether capturing the intricate lace of the saree or the subtle emotions on a bride’s face, the GFX100S II’s 102-megapixel medium format sensor and vibrant colour science delivered stunning results .Its intuitive design and weather resistance enhanced usability, with fast startup times ensuring no moment was missed. The grip of the camera fit like a glove, providing comfort and stability. This ergonomic design reduces fatigue, especially important during extended shooting sessions. The GF55mmF1.7 lens complemented the camera perfectly, capturing details with stunning depth of field and clarity. With its 55mm focal length, equivalent to 43mm on a full frame, it has quickly become my favourite for its ability to capture portraits with natural perspective and minimal distortion. Dual memory card slots ensure data security, crucial for preserving precious memories. Looking ahead, I envision utilizing the GFX100S II as my primary wedding camera, alongside FUJIFILM’s APS-C lineup like the X-T5 and X-H2.
As I reflect on my journey from the humble beginnings to the present moment, I am struck by the evolution and growth that has defined my path in photography. From navigating the challenges of an introverted nature to overcoming industry biases, every step has been a testament to resilience and passion. As I continue to travel across the globe, documenting love in its many facets, my partnership with FUJIFILM underscores a commitment to innovation and quality. With cutting-edge tools like the GFX100 S II and GF55mmF1.7 lens, I’m empowered to immortalize fleeting moments into timeless memories. It’s incredibly meaningful to realize that my photographs will endure long after I’m gone, becoming cherished family heirlooms—a humble yet significant addition to the ongoing story of human life.
