GFX100S: “More than Full Frame” x Niklas Eschenmoser

02.05.2021

It is the barren mountain landscapes, the wide glaciers and the lonely valleys that drive me into the mountains. In my photographic work I pursue the goal of documenting these alpine landscapes from their most untouched sides. To achieve this I depend on a reliable camera system with maximum image quality.

I am Niklas Eschenmoser, a landscape photographer from Switzerland and. I have been taking pictures with Fujifilm for four years.

For me, a camera must have a high image resolution and yet be compact so that it can be taken on long trips. The new FUJIFILM GFX100S has proven to be the perfect companion for my landscape photography. It has completely exceeded my expectations of what a camera can do.

100 megapixels in a medium format body, so compact yet powerful, is incredible. The FUUJIFILM GFX100S feels like a full-frame camera in terms of form factor, but is definitely more than full-frame in terms of performance.

In my pictures I want to have the structures, textures and details sharp from corner to corner. In the resulting images I was able to zoom in over 100% and had hardly any loss of sharpness. This was also visible in the over two meter print we produced as part of the campaign. I was very impressed by the fine details and the outstanding sharpness right to the edge of the picture.

Due to physical exertion and time pressure I am not always able to find the perfect detail for my pictures on location. Here the high resolution offers me a lot of leeway to change the picture section as desired in the post-processing.

The new image stabiliser offers me great flexibility. It works very convincingly and thanks to it I can do without a tripod on high alpine tours. During the shooting I took pictures with the Fujinon GF30mmF3.5 without any problems before sunrise with a 1/10 second from my hand.

Since I always work with manual settings, it helps me a lot when I can see the chosen settings at a glance. The big display on the top of the camera shows me all necessary settings at a glance. This intuitive operation runs through the whole camera. The majority of the buttons can be adjusted to your own needs. The simple and fast operation of the camera is clearly continued with the GFX100S.

On my tours I am often exposed to challenging weather conditions. The GFX100S feels extremely robust and gives me the feeling that I can use it in any weather. During the shooting it was -20 degrees below zero! If you keep the batteries warm enough, such operations are no problem for the camera.

Meaningful colors have a high priority in my photography. The pictures from the large sensor of the GFX100S contain extremely large amounts of color information. The 16bit RAW’s allow almost endless possibilities for color editing.

This camera now allows me to print huge prints without losing quality in the details. The fine color gradients together with the enormous sharpness let the pictures look very lively. To see the quality of the pictures in a large print is unbelievable.

With this camera I will be able to capture the high alpine world in 100 megapixels in the future. The Fujifilm GFX100S definitely gives me new ways to visually communicate my vision.
